Marjorie M. K. Hlava, Co-Founder and President, Access Innovations, Inc.
This one-hour session will cover the implications of choosing – or not choosing – taxonomy terms viewed through the lens of censorship. This quirk of appelomancy (the wizardry of naming things) came to light during the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus was called by many different names through the course of the pandemic, some very scientific, and others casual even to the point of pejorative. Margie will address the pros and cons of including various terms within a taxonomy. Following that, she will present updates to the Data Harmony software since the February DHUG meeting and some sneak peeks at what is under development.

2:45 – 3:15 p.m. – Getting Landmark Content Directly to the Researcher at ASCE
Jeff Froustet, Assistant Manager, Metadata Solutions, and Joann Fogleson, Director, Publishing Technology, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
For the first time in its history, ASCE offers 125 years of civil engineering history and research. ASCE has digitized its complete archive of historical content dating all the way back to 1872, allowing libraries access to the complete digital archive of civil engineering technical content. ASCE is bringing the earliest volumes of landmark ASCE journals content directly to the researcher. This includes the history of seminal civil engineering landmarks, as well as the research of pioneering civil engineers. Access Innovations’ Data Harmony Suite of software products played a crucial role in many steps of bringing the project to life. The XIS Metadata helped in the creation of XML created by a vendor. The XML was then feed back into XIS for more robust MAI. In addition, in-house programming has been implemented to apply quality control.
