Review 1:
Review of Martin Mayer in Opera
What was a triumph in January was the Mimi of Hei-Kyung Hong in the Met's "Boh?me," the first starring role in our house for an artist who will have many, many more. Vocally, musically and theatrically gifted, Miss Hong catches the eye on entrance, moves gracefully and always just off the beat, maintaining a dramatic function apart from the music, knows what to do with her hands - and makes phrases with a delicacy that reminds one of the young Tebaldi. She puts over the cadence of "senza rancor" in the third act with such natural expressiveness that the listener forgets he ever heard it before. Peter Dvorsky was an effective partner for her (less so for the Bohemians) as Rodolfo: he sings loud but he sings good, with a plangent ring. Brian Shexnayder handled Marcello easily, and Myra Merritt not only believed in Musetta (most sopranos do) but made the audience believe, too. The Zeffirelli production has held up admirably (I should admit I always liked it), and the Met has not stinted on the second-act gang of choristers and supers. Julius Rudel conducted with feeling and pleasure, and the orchestra played superbly for him.
