Review 1:
Review of Robert Jacobson in the March 8, 1980 issue of Opera News
"Rigoletto" returned December 18, providing a showcase for a new Gilda in the person of Mariella Devia, whose childlike soprano, impressive vocal technique and clean, unmannered style made her a joy. She recalled the Lily Pons nightingale variety of Gilda, her tone a bit glassy and with an edge but, at the same time, gifted with rare refinement and delicacy, while her acting had similar simplicity and appeal. Neil Shicoff's tenor has gained in weight and variety as the Duke, and Sherrill Milnes was in resplendent, expansive voice as the jester. Michelangelo Veltri led a safe, sound reading, rhythmically unobtrusive but lacking imagination.
