ARROYO AND BRUSON SING IN ?TROVATORE?

The third performance of the Metropolitan Opera's new production of "Il Trovatore" had two new singers. One of them, Renato Bruson, made a last- minute appearance, replacing an indisposed Sherrill Milnes. The other was Martina Arroyo as Leonora.

Miss Arroyo continues to improve. She always had a big, soaring voice. Now she sings with color, knows how to pace herself, and produces tone after tone of focused beauty. She is a most impressive singer. Mr. Bruson is a well-routined baritone, and he sang the Count di Luna with resonant top notes. His weakness is in his uncertain lower register.

Others in the cast were Pl?cido Domingo, Grace Bumbry, and John Macurdy. Zubin Mehta conducted. The new production nears a striking resemblance to the artifacts in the Tunnel of Horror in the old Midway of Coney Island. There was one breathtaking moment in Act II, Scene 2, when Mr. Domingo, making his dashing entrance, tripped and went the last 20 feet on his knees. If he limps in future performances, that will be the reason.
