Review 1:
Review of Irving Kolodin in the March 20, 1965 issue of the Saturday
In addition to singing the Saturday broadcast of "Walk?re," that was close to the best, if not the best, he has done in his career here, Jon Vickers undertook to fit himself for the first time into the vocal and physical attire of Erik in "Der Fliegende Hollander." It had certain sturdy attributes of musicianship, phrasing, and clean enunciation that are the expectable attributes of this Canadian-born singer, plus some limitations, in warmth or tenderness of accent, that one would have been tempted to put in the same category prior to this latest Siegmund. In the light of what he was, at least, trying to do in the Ring drama, it may be presumed that Vickers is aware of this shortcoming and attempting to amend it. Certainly one could not imagine a huskier, more athletic specimen of a Norwegian huntsman. Maria Kouba's Senta was neatly drawn on a rather small scale, but her inability to sing the softer passages of the Ballade on pitch suggests that this may be one of those voices that is dependable only at forte or louder. The Walk?re cast was exactly as before and included William Steinberg as the more than relaxed conductor.
