Review 1:

Review of Conrad S. Susa in Musical America
Two towering performances occurred in the sixth "Don Carlo" of the season, on January 11, those of Giorgio Tozzi as King Philip and of David Ward as the Grand Inquisitor. Their scene together in Act III was on a high level of intensity. Of course, this is some of Verdi's best music, but Tozzi's rich introspection and Ward's monumental dignity found their vocal counterparts and the combination was simply overwhelming. This was Tozzi's first appearance in the role at the Met. Another first performance was that of Biserka Cvejic as Princess Eboli. She also did some fine singing, although her voice has a tendency to spread when it gets loud. Mary Curtis-Verna (Elizabeth of Valois) did nicely in her quiet way. Richard Tucker was in commendable form; so was Kurt Adler, the conductor; so was the orchestra.
