Review 1:
Review of Jack Diether in Musical America
After a somewhat strained "Celeste Aida," Sandor Konya's performance improved steadily. Coming so early in the opera, the famous tenor aria is a cruel test at any time; no wonder it taxed Mr. Konya, who was singing his first Radames here. But the truly heavenly Aida of Galina Vishnevskaya soon warmed him up and immersed him completely in the drama, as it had Mr. Vickers before him, and the last two acts were vocally splendid and tremendously exciting. With a modicum of forcing, Mr. Konya's pleasant and lyrical tones proved a welcome relief from the prevalent steeliness we have come to associate with the role.
The excitement was also caught up by George Schick in the pit, and the orchestral playing was quite sensitive. Rosalind Elias, replaced Irene Dalis as Amneris. Though obviously inhibited by having to fight a steep staircase throughout her big scene in the last act, Miss Elias managed to convey Amneris' anguish and imprecations creditably, and was in good voice. By the final entombment scene, this intriguing Russian - Hungarian - American trio of stars had fused into a gripping musical tableau.
