LICIA ALBANESE AS LI?
Sings 'Turandot' Role at 'Met' for Only Time This Season
Licia Albanese's sole appearance this season as Li? in the new production of "Turandot" at the Metropolitan Opera House was made on Saturday night. It was a memorable performance, almost a capstone in the soprano's long and honorable career here.
Her Li? was not so much pathetic, as the character generally appears, as it was genuinely tragic, because of the intensity and conviction with which she sang and acted. The music lay well for the voice, and Miss Albanese sang with fullness of tone and searing phrases.
Sharing honors with Miss Albanese in the cast were Birgit Nilsson, in the title role; Franco Corelli, as Calaf; Frank Guarrera, Robert Nagy and Charles Anthony, as Ping, Pang and Pong; Alessio De Paolis, as the Emperor, and George Cehanovsky, as the Mandarin. Leopold Stokowski conducted.
