Review of Miles Kastendieck in the Journal-American

Roberta as Lucia

Roberta Peters sang Lucia for the first time at the Metropolitan last night. In stepping up to "the" coloratura role in the current operatic repertory, she did so with a vocal assurance as resourceful as her singing was clean-cut accurate and pure in tone.

Always an intelligent artist, Miss Peters proceeded somewhat cautiously at first. By the "Mad Scene," however, she was in her element and sang with a command and an agility that drew well deserved applause. As she soared into the high register, she caught the admiration of the crowd, then won it as she topped off the scene with her E flat in truly brilliant fashion.

That she was not Lucia in person becomes a matter for growth and experience, she was in looks. Her first portrayal was a cool one, untouched by the tragic conflict of the role. It is doubtful, however, that she has received enough imaginative direction either musically or dramatically to get below its surface.

As for Donizetti's "Lucia" it pursued a humdrum undramatic course. Jan Peerce has sung a much more vital Edgardo. The rest of the cast served adequately.
