?Faust? at the Met
"Faust" again ? with Pierre Monteux conducting again ? and with a familiar cast: Jan Peerce in the title role; Victoria de los Angeles as Marguerite; also Frank Guarrera, Mildred Miller, Thelma Votipka, Lawrence- Davidson, and one "first,? but only a seasonal one: Cesare Siepi as Mephistopheles ? all of this on stage at the Metropolitan Opera House Monday perhaps should have added up to too much repetition, but it didn't. The Metropolitan Opera Company owns a perfect production of a perfect opera, Under Mr. Monteux "Faust" moves at an impeccable pace, one that allows every moment of its gracious music to drift warmly into the senses.
And at a pace, too, that overwhelms minor discrepancies. Although Miss de los Angeles forced an occasional high note Monday night and Mr. Peerce's voice was small, and Mr. Siepi didn?t quite settle into his crackling version of his role until the second act, the total atmosphere was not one whit disturbed. Mr. Monteux had it too well in hand.
