Review 1:

Review of Ronald Eyer in Musical America

The season's first La Traviata served to introduce a promising young Italian baritone, Ettore Bastianini, in the role of the elder Germont. The voice is voluminous and of a pleasing texture, and Mr. Bastianini has a tenor-like projection that prevents his tones from ever sounding swallowed or hollow. His Di Provenza won him a storm of applause, which did not abate until the conductor resumed the performance. He stepped out of character, however, in presenting this aria directly to the audience, and his general deportment in the part of a suave Parisian gentleman would be better for a little more polish.
