Paolo Silveri Sings the Role of Scarpia at the Met

Paolo Silveri sang the role of Baron Scarpia in ?Tosca? at the Metropolitan last night, and his performance evoked cheers, bravos and long applause from an enthusiastic audience.

His singing was splendid all through the sinister dramatic characterization, and his stage presence was at once histrionic yet unstereotyped.

The role of Scarpia seems perfectly suited to Silver?s voice and temperament and it exploits fully the varied tonal range of his fine baritone, a deliberate use of the variety in tone and vocal manner being an intrinsic part of the vivid impersonation.

Other members of the cast were as before: Delia Rigal was Tosca, Kurt Baum was Mario, Lorenzo Alvary sang the part of Cesare Angelotti, and Gerhard Pechner was the Sacristan. Fausto Cleva directed the opera through a smooth and unified performance.
