?Forza del Destino?
Jerome Hines Sings First Padre Guardiano Role
Jerome Hines, bass, was heard Saturday afternoon in his first performance of the role of Padre Guardiano in the Metropolitan Opera Company?s production of ?La Forza del Destino,? by Verdi. The rest of the cast was identical with that of the [first] night; Luomir Vichegonov as the Marquis; Zinka Milanov as Leonora; Leonard Warren as Don Carlo; Gerhard Pechner as Fra Melitone; and Mildred Miller, Laura Castellano and Algerd Brazis. Fritz Stiedry conducted.
Mr. Hines made a notable characterization of a role which would not have seemed to present many possibilities in that direction; not at least by comparison with some of those which Verdi conceived more dramatically. It is a part which calls for nothing in the way of violent histrionics, which has, as a matter of fact, almost no stage ?business? at all. And, yet, by virtue of his perfect and dignified singing and his gently expressed but well projected relationships with the other characters, the singer was able to provide a focal point for many on-stage groups which might otherwise have split off into their separate units. That his part became a little passive in the longer terms of the opera is not at all surprising. Fate, in the form of Giuseppe Verdi, dealt the passivity into his role.
As for the other major characters of the opera, their performances were once more as one would have expected, extremely satisfying.
