Jean Madeira Heard as Azucena at 'Met'
The young listeners are not the only ones who get a chance at the student matinees given at the Metropolitan Opera House under the auspices of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. Young singers also benefit from the performances by getting chances at big roles, and yesterday afternoon Jean Madeira, who joined the company two seasons ago, got her first opportunity to sing Azucena in "Il Trovatore."
She made the most of it. She looked youthful for the part, but she sang it exceptionally well. The role calls for the singer to open cold with an exacting aria, "Stride la Vampa," but Miss Madeira was in good voice from the start. She sang with pure, rich, warm tones that carried easily through the large house.

Her acting, too, was good, for it was carefully detailed. There were no gestures that were not significant, and she brought much of the necessary intensity to the part. When she came out for her solo bow after the gypsy scene, the students who filled the auditorium added cheers to their applause.
The production was the third guild matinee of the season and the opera's tenth presentation, Other members of the cast were familiar in their parts. Delia Rigal substituted for Regina Resnik as Leonora, but otherwise the singers were as announced. They were Kurt Baum, Francesco Valentino, Barbara Troxell, Nicola Moscona, Leslie Chabay and John Baker. The conductor was Alberto Erede.
