Lily Pons Heard as Lucia in Her Seasonal Debut
Lily Pons made her first appearance this season with Metropolitan Opera Association yesterday afternoon singing the title role in Donizetti’s opera “Lucia di Lammermoor.” The performance was given for the benefit of the Near East College Association and the cast, a familiar one, included Jan Peerce as Edgardo, Francesco Valentino as Lord Ashton, Felix Knight as Raimondo, Leslie Chabay as Normanno and Thelma Votipka as Alisa. The orchestra was under the direction of Pietro Cimara.
Miss Pons’s Lucia was an all-around treat. She built her characterization around the “Mad Scene” and her singing of this was thoroughly elegant. Her trill was crisp and bright, her coloratura agile, flexible, and she lifted a high-lying phrase into the air lightly and with complete assurance. Yesterday her vocal work gleamed; it had sweetness and it floated. There was no real depth to her portrayal; it is all fireworks, but these skyrocket and flare.
Mr. Peerce is a vocally grand and dignified Edgardo. Dramatically, he makes the role a collection of attitudes and postures, but singing full-voice, Mr. Peerce produced a smart array of round, ringing tones.
