"Lohengrin"

Melchior Sings Title Role for First Time This Season

Wagner's "Lohengrin" was given yesterday afternoon at the Metropolitan Opera House, Fritz Busch conducting. Lauritz Melchior sang the title role for the first time this season. Helen Traubel, who had been scheduled to sing Elsa, was replaced by Astrid Varnay, and the part of King Henry, which was to have been taken by Norman Cordon, was sung by Nicola Moscona, who sang the part a fortnight ago. Both Miss Traubel and Mr. Cordon were indisposed.

Miss Varnay and Mr. Melchior made an impressive couple in the first act, their voicess carrying splendidly above the orchestra. It was Mr. Melchior who dominated the scene vocally, the clarity of his tone and diction being only occasionally marred by a certain slight explosiveness at the beginning of a note. Miss Varnay's [first] scene in the second act was subdued in volume, although in her scene with Ortrud (sung by Kerstin Thorborg) her higher notes were admirable in their strength and purity. Herbert Janssen sang the part of Telramund, and Hugh Thompson was the King's Herald.
