Jobin Is Heard At Metropolitan In Role of Faust
Gounod's "Faust" had its second performance of the season at the Metropolitan Opera House last night under Sir Thomas Beecham's direction. Licia Albanese again sang Marguerite, but there was a new Faust, Raoul Jobin, and Norman Cordon succeeded Ezio Pinza as the Mephistopheles. Richard Bonelli reappeared as Marguerite's unforgiving brother, Valentin, with Lucielle Browning as Siebel, Thelma Votipka as Marthe and George Cehanovsky was Wagner.
This was Mr. Jobin's first Metropolitan appearance as Faust in a regular stage performance, although he has been heard in excerpts from the work in a Sunday night concert. What with a divided schedule, the reviewer heard hardly enough of the Canadian tenor's share in the performance to give a conclusive idea of its merits, but liked what he was able to hear of Mr. Jobin's singing. A similarly partial hearing gave an impression of much effectiveness on the part of Mr. Cordon's Mephistopheles. The audience was large, and applause was long and fervent after the garden scene.
