Stella Roman Sings Leonora in "Trovatore"

Before putting its new production of "Il Trovatore" away for this season, the Metropolitan permitted some of its alternate performers a chance to sing their roles in the opera house last night. Conspicuous among them were Stella Roman, as Leonora (her first time at the Metropolitan), Anna Kaskas (Azucena) and Arthur Carron (Manrico). Both Miss Kaskas and Mr. Carron had sung these parts in the house (the latter only in a spring season), but neither was a familiar effort.

From any aspect, the important accomplishment of the evening was Miss Kaskas's Azucena. Her voice is not as heavy as some heard in the role recently, but it was infused with fine dramatic feeling and supported by steady musical understanding. The Leonora of Miss Roman had some fine moments, especially in the ensembles, when her powerful tones soared forth with ease, but her solo singing was erratic, both in quality and pitch. However, it is a part in which she can undoubtedly develop. Mr. Carron was also more often loud than good, but he seems to have increased his vocal resources toward more consistent control of his big voice. Francesco Valentino won a rousing endorsement for his singing of "Il Balen." Nicola Moscona was Ferrando and Ferruccio Calusio conducted.
