Season's 3rd "Lohengrin" Is Given at Metropolitan

Karin Branzell Sings Ortrud in Only Cast Change

Wagner's "Lohengrin" had its third performance of the season at the Metropolitan Opera House last night with the cast of two weeks before, except for Karin Branzell as Ortrud. The noted Swedish contralto's appearance could be regarded as marking her season's debut here, although she had had a brief unheralded hearing last Friday, when she had sung the role of one of Br?nnhilde's sisters in "Die Walk?re" at short notice.

Mme. Branzell's impersonation of the nefarious Ortrud was, as in past seasons, intelligent and dramatic, and her voice had its wonted power, sounding forth the curse early in the second act impressively, although there were some incompletely focused tones along with others of her normally laudable quality. Lauritz Melchior again sang Lohengrin, Kirsten Flagstad's Elsa was as usual, laudable from both the vocal and dramatic point of view. Julius Huehn, in good voice as Telramund; Ludwig Hofmann, as the King, and George Cehanovsky, as the herald, completed the cast under Maurice de Abravanel's direction.
