Ring Cycle [60]
Review 1:
Review in unidentified New York newspaper
Evening 'Ring' Ends
Gertrude R?nger substituted for Kirsten Flagstad as Br?nnhilde in Saturday night's performance of "G?tterd?mmerung," which brought to its conclusion the special evening "Ring" cycle. Appearing on short notice in a role obviously a weighty and taxing one for her, Mme. R?nger discharged her duties honorably, proving that she had both the knowledge of the traditions and the vocal reserve for a competent, if not a brilliant embodiment of the wronged and suffering former Valkyr. To her went the credit for saving the performance, since but for her readiness, a change of bill might have been necessary.
The Siegfried of the evening was Paul Althouse, inclined to a Lied-like lyricism whenever opportunity presented and physically somewhat dwarfed by the towering presence of the Hagen of Ludwig Holfmann and the still loftier Gunther of Julius Huehn. Mr. Hofmann's was the dominating personality of the evening, save for that the Artur Bodanzky in the pit, where the orchestra gave a generally superior if not an immaculate performance. Irene Jessner as Gutrune, Karin Branzell as Waltraute and Edward Habich as Alberich were the others engaged. The audience was one of capacity proportions.
