Lehmann and Melchior Sing in 'Tannh?user'
With Lotte Lehmann and Lauritz Melchior in the roles of Elisabeth and the erring Heinrich, Wagner's "Tannh?user" was accorded its second and concluding performance of the season at the Metropolitan last night. Present to applaud was what appeared to be one of the season's largest audiences. Standees in such numbers as formerly were to be found only at aria-strung Italian operas braved enthusiastically the long acts, the first of which was appreciably extended by restorations made by the conductor, Maurice de Abravanel, of music in the Venusberg that has been cut in recent performances. Venus, admirably sung on this occasion by Karin Branzell, was the stage personage who profited thereby.
Miss Lehmann was in good voice and her impersonation had its familiar appeal. New and fortunate costumes contributed to Mr. Melchior's usual resounding success in the name part. Friedrich Schorr returned to the grave airs of Wolfram and Ludwig Hofmann reappeared as the Landgrave. Others concerned in a generally praiseworthy representation were Hans Clemens, Arnold Gabor, Max Altglass, James Wolfe and Stella Andreva.
