'Rigoletto' Is Performed Again at Metropolitan
Martini Ill, Jagel Appears in Role of the Duke
Verdi's "Rigoletto" had its second performance of the season last night at the Metropolitan Opera House with Frederick Jagel reappearing as the Duke in place of Nino Martini, who has joined the list of the Metropolitan's sufferers from colds and kindred ailments. Bruna Castagna, scheduled to sing Maddalena, had been a member of the indisposed group after several days and was replaced in this role by Irra Petina.
The vocal honors of the evening went to Lawrence Tibbett, whose performance as Rigoletto shows increasing mastery of the dramatic significance of the character. Miss Bovy did some very good singing, and was clear and true to the pitch in the closing high E in the second act, although the unevenness of tone quality observed in her previous appearances could still be noticed. Mr. Jagel sang very commendably in his relief assignment, while Mmes. Symons, Votipka and Browning, Messrs. Lazzari as Sparafucile; Cordon, Cehanovsky, Paltrinieri and Engelman completed the cast. The performance was under Ettore Panizza's direction.
