"L'Elisir d'Amore" revealing itself as a potent Metropolitan Magnet

To open the last week but one of the Metropolitan opera Mr. Gatti-Casazza regaled his Monday night subscribers with his revived "L'Elisir d'Amore," a final showing of Donizetti's tuneful comedy for this season. The cast differed in one respect from that of the earlier performances. Mme. Editha Fleischer assumed, for the first time here, the role of Adina, which she had been prevented from taking previously by illness. Doubtless her mannerisms of gesture suggested rather that Nemorino's lady-love was a prosperous "Landwirthin" than a rich "contadina," but, aside from the national dislocation, she played the part with a humor, caprice, and pungency that were altogether in character and eminently effective. For her singing less can be said. Though it possessed fluency and expressiveness, her voice had not regained its habitual substance and timbre.

Otherwise, the evening served to emphasize once more the excellence achieved by Mr. Gigli, both as singer and as actor, in the role of Nemorino; the skillful singing and appropriate acting of Mr. de Luca as Sergeant Belcore, and the opulent fun-making of Mr. Pinza as Dr. Dulcamara. Only, I wish that with repetition this accomplished artist would not add certain touches of buffoonery which are unworthy of the part and of himself. The conducting of Mr. Serafin was once more essential to the meritoriousness of the presentation.
