Review 1:
Review by Olin Downes in the New York Times:
Gladys Swarthout was cordially greeted in her first operatic role here at yesterday's Metropolitan matinee of "La Gioconda." Miss Swarthout, a native of Kansas City, had appeared in the West with the Chicago Civic and Ravinia Park companies, and had sung in a Sunday opera concert on Broadway as well as the Metropolitan's recent performance of "The Sunken Bell" in Philadelphia.
She showed yesterday, as La Cieca, a voice of good quality, depth and volume in the blind mother's air "Voce di donna," and acted the character with intelligent sympathy.
