Review of Grena Bennett in the American

TIBBETT WINS BIG SUCCESS IN OPERA 'JONNY SPIELT AUF'

A new interest was introduced into the performance of "Jonny Spielt Auf" at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. Lawrence Tibbett sang the part of Jonny for the first time and scored an immediate and tremendous success. His conception of the black-faced band master is more nearly the American idea of a jazz musician than is that of Michael Bohnen. Mr. Tibbett's make-up, too, is a conventional and accepted one. In fact, he looked enough like Al Jolson to be his twin brother.

There is little to comment upon so far as Mr. Tibbett's share of the music is concerned, but his spirited acting, the lively pace of his scenes and his understanding of the modern American idiom in popular music were the urge that prompted an amusing and interesting study of the part.

The other characters were in familiar hands. Dorothee Manski sang Anita, the opera singer who was irresistible to all men, Editha Fleischer was the coquettish chambermaid. Walter Kirchhoff sang Max, the composer, Friedrich Schorr was the violinist, and Messrs. Meader, Gabor, Burgstaller, Windheim, Gustafson and Cehanovsky essayed the other roles in a work that is very much like a German salad with curious American dressing. Mr. Bodanzky wielded the baton zealously.
