Das Rheingold received one performance this season.

Review 1:

Review of Olin Downes in The New York Times:

The artist who made the most memorable impression of anyone on the stage was Mme. Schumann-Heink. Her brief address to Wotan projected itself over every other episode of the performance. The voice yielded what was essential to the delivery of the phrases, in point of color and sonority. Its present physical limitations were recognized, controlled, directed in masterly fashion. The ominous words of Erda form in every event a point of pause and of prophecy that rings through the whole great trilogy that follows, "Rheingold."

Action was arrested for a mighty moment. In the hands of an artist of indifferent capacities this moment can shrink very small. Nothing less than a great mistress of art suffices for this passage. The consciousness that was deep in the tone itself, in its every color and inflection, so impressed the listener yesterday that it was some minutes after the disappearance of Erda that he was able to give his attention again to the things transpiring before his eyes. This was the fault of Ernestine Schumann-Heink.
