Martinelli in Rare Form as Eleazar in 'La Juive'
His Voice a Bright Spot in Listless Production
There have been better performances at the Metropolitan this season than the repetition of Halevy's "La Juive," which occupied the stage last evening. Doubtless the untimely warm weather was responsible for the enervated quality of the general presentation, which lacked vitality and cohesiveness. There were, however, certain bright aspects in an otherwise dull evening. The role of Eleazar is one of Martinelli's best characterizations, one which he increasingly elaborates with carefully considered histrionism and intelligent singing.
Elena Rakowska, wife of Tullio Serafin, principal Italian conductor of the company, was cast as Rachel, making her first appearance here this season. It is a part which lies well for her and which she was often able to make dramatically effective. Queena Mario, not in her best form, sang the ornate role of the Princess and Mr. Rothier was a tremulous, but pictorially impressive, Cardinal. Other roles were assigned to Messrs. Tedesco, Picco, Gustafson, Ananian and Wolfe. One of the most engaging interludes was the elaborate ballet of Act III in which the kindergarten ballerinas took energetic part and which also offered the graceful "pas de deux" by Rosina Galli and Mr. Bonfiglio. Mr. Hasselmans conducted.
