EASTON SCORES AGAIN AT MET

Soprano Sings Difficult Role in 'Madama Butterfly' and Delights Audience.

Again Florence Easton took the audience at the Metropolitan Opera House Saturday evening by storm. The Puccini opera, "Madama Butterfly, seems to be degenerating into a vehicle for the glorification of this beautiful soprano.

Cio-Cio-San is an extremely difficult role. Not only is the music for this character of difficult nature, but Cio-Cio-San remains all through the three acts, and has as much to sing as any two other principals combined. To Mme. Easton's credit, it must be said that her voice was as fresh as the end as it was at the start. Again Mme. Easton delivered a type of singing that was a delight to the ear. There was not a harsh tone in her. Finally, she proved to be an actress of the first rank. Few will forget the remarkable acting that characterized her work in the last two acts.

Frederick Jagel was Pinkerton. This young tenor, who made his debut as Radames last Election Day, again proved his fitness for the Metropolitan stage. He is a remarkable actor, very natural and good to look at. His voice is not powerful. In fact, there were moments when it was entirely lost. But there is a delightful sweetness, a mellowness that instantly claims attention.

Antonio Scotti was again Sharpless. Mr. Scotti was in exceptional voice last night, and together with his good acting, pleased greatly. We must not forget Ina Bourskaya as Suzuki, nor Alfio Tedesco, who played Goro. Others in the cast were Phradie Wells, Paolo Ananian, William Gustafson, Paolo Quintana and Millo Picco.
