American Girl in Opera Debut

Leonora Corona Sings Role of Leonora in 'Il Trovatore'

Thanksgiving, "Trovatore," "Turandot" and Turkey, all came together yesterday.

But to one person, at least, those matters were of secondary importance. Her name is Leonora Corona. She is an American girl, born in Dallas, Texas. She had previously made successes on the lyrical stage in several countries other than her own. Yesterday afternoon she effected her American debut at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her role was, strangely enough, that of Leonora in "Il Trovatore."

Because the occasion meant much, perhaps everything, to Miss Corona, and perhaps, also, because she is a conscientious performer, she was beset with an unusually high degree of nervousness. At the beginning, she found it obviously difficult to control breath and pitch, and to steady her tone-production. On that account, this

Warmly Received

The debutant succeeded in revealing yesterday, however, before the end of the opera, that she has sympathetic tone quality, especially in lyrical passages, temperamental drive, plenty of projectional power and thorough knowledge of stage requirements in action. In appearance, she is comely of face and commanding in stature. Miss Corona was warmly received by the audience.

Giovanni Martinelli found the intensive tenor role of Manrico mostly to his liking, what with its elements of romance and heroics. He made the most of both and stirred his listeners to spontaneous outbursts of applause. Also, Margarete Matzenauer, secure in a real contralto range and atmosphere, did much for the role of Azucena, the Romany lady whose gypsy curse brings about most of the trouble in the libretto. The Count de Luna had Giuseppe Danise as his carefully singing expositor. Philine Falco was the Inez. Other parts were taken by Ezio Pinza, Arnold Gabor and Giordano Paltrinieri.

Sturdy old "Trovatore" holds its own in the appeal of the tunes and the vitality of its orchestration and both came to effective hearing at the hand of Vincenzo Bellezza who conducted.
