FRANCES ALDA WINS FAVOR IN 'BOH?ME'

A work that retains its appeal in music and libretto is Puccini's "La Boh?me." His melodic talent flows at its freshest in these measures, which seem to find exactly the right expression for the romance, youthful ebulliency and moving, even if artificial, pathos of Murger's imperishable story.

Even a jaded music critic could go into the Metropolitan last evening and for an hour or so fall under the spell of the tunes and the fascinating stage-doings. The experience was made the more pleasant because Mme. Frances Alda did the role of Mimi, a part which she made very much her own, as it suits her voice and singing style most admirably. She acts it, too, with a convincing blend of coquetry and sadness.

Giovanni Martinelli was the Rodolfo, and he attached himself as ardently to the little flower-maker as he did to the top tones of his music. In Louise Hunter, the Musetta of the evening found an arch and winsome representative, who warbled the waltz-song with skill. It is not by any means the easy bit of vocalism which amateurs make it appear. Excellent fun-making was provided by Messrs. Picco, Ananian, Scotti, Didur and Malatesta. Vincenzo Ballezza conducted convincingly.
