Martinelli's 'La Juive' Repeated With Acclaim

Mme. Larsen-Todsen Is Recalled and Shares Final Curtain Calls With Tenor

Ludovic Hal?vy's "La Juive," which was revived with much acclamation on December 12, only to return to an enforced retirement during the illness of its protagonist, Giovanni Martinelli, was brought out for a second time last night at the Metropolitan Opera House, with the same tenor as Eleazar. His was, especially from the vocal point of view, a very good performance; his singing combined power with smoothness, while his acting was, if not overpowering, effective. A demonstration followed each of his major arias, with another at the close.

Rachel, who had been Florence Easton in December, was now Nanny Larsen-Todsen in her first other-than-German role in this house. While her voice hardly possessed the unruffled smoothness of Rosa Ponselle's in this role, Mme. Larsen-Todsen played the part more than commendably; strong in voice and striking in appearance and action, and shared the six or seven final curtain calls with Mr. Martinelli. Charlotte Ryan, apart from vocal vibration, sang the part of the princess with clarity of tone and increased dramatic effectiveness, while Mr. Errolle was an agreeably voiced, if somewhat conventional, Leopold. Mr. Mardones, replacing Mr. Rothier as the Cardinal, was in excellent voice and, on the whole, convincing in action, while Messrs. Gabor, D'Angelo and Wolfe completed the cast directed by Mr. Hasselmans.
