Miss M?ller Takes Place of Miss Rethberg in the Role of Eva

Wagner is more prevalent than Puccini at the Metropolitan just at present. "Das Rheingold" having been given on Thursday at a special matin?e in a series which will disclose the whole trilogy of the fatal ring, "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" was sung last night before a subscription audience. It was the first performance of the season, but there was novelty in the cast.

Miss Rethberg had been scheduled to sing Eva, but she was not in sufficiently good vocal condition to undertake the task, and it was made known yesterday about noon that Miss M?ller would take her place. The Metropolitan is especially well equipped with singers of German works and the substitution of one Eva for another does not in any way affect the smooth running of the operatic machine.

Miss M?ller was an Eva who combined personal charm with musical delivery. Her voice and style are well suited to the music of "Die Meistersinger" and she received a full share of the applause of the evening. Her companion as Magdalene was Miss Henrietta Wakefield.

Mr. Schorr's Hans Sachs is well known and deservedly admired. This sterling artist has proved to be a valuable addition to the company. Mr. Taucher was a tolerable Walther, Mr. Meader an admirable David, Mr. Sch?tzendorf an excellent Beckmesser and Mr. Rothier is a sincere Pogner. Mr. Bodanzky conducted.
