Toti dal Monte Sings Gilda
A house packed to doors and ceiling heard the Metropolitan's "Rigoletto" last night, which offered, as novelty, Mme. Toti dal Monte to sing the role of Gilda. In her two appearances here as Lucia the Italian soprano had shown true musicianly feeling and a particularly fine sense of the lyric possibilities of the music, as well as considerable skill in florid vocalization and a touching fidelity to true pitch. In Gilda's music she disclosed again these welcome qualities, intensified even by the fact that Verdi's heroine plays into her voice still more gratefully than Donizetti's. Her "Caro nome" deserved the ovation it won.
Mr. De Luca repeated his admirable impersonation of the jester, and Mme. Gordon in Maddalena. Mr. Lauri-Volpi in the Duke and Mr. Mardones in Sparafucile filled roles they had often undertaken here before. The admirable conductor of the occasion was Tullio Serafin.
