Review of Mary Ellis Opdyke in the New York Sun

'BARBER' AIDS FRIENDLESS GIRLS

A performance of Rossini's "Barber of Seville" yesterday afternoon at the Metropolitan was given for the benefit of the Wayside Home for Friendless Girls. It was also the occasion for Titta Ruffo's last appearance of the season which as the barber Figaro, he celebrated with unusual animation and roguery. These qualities were likewise shared by Galli-Curci and Lauri-Volpi as Rosina and Almaviva, both of whom made up for defalcations from the correct pitch by unflagging vivacity and comic charm. Mme. Galli-Curci sang the "Mignon" Polonaise in the lesson scene, following it with "Home, Sweet Home" in the exact intonation of which she certainly appeared more at home than at other times. And the audience, assembled out of charity for the friendless, were full of enthusiastic hospitality for the mellow soprano, the sturdy and sympathetic new tenor and the departing and much to be missed barytone.
