Knote Triumphs as Lohengrin
Mme. Eames Sings the Role of Elsa with Unusual Dramatic Power and Intensity
Eames as Elsa, Knote as Lohengrin. Little wonder that the Metropolitan Opera House held a big and fashionable audience last night.
That the bewitching princess has long been a favorite role of Mme. Eames and that she would lend all the best of her voice to making Elsa a literally enchanting one was to be expected.
Mme. Eames has seldom sung with the passion which glorified the Wagner heroine last night. Self delight in the character marked almost every note, and she seemed carried away with an intense earnestness, which was imparted to her auditors and found frequent relief in applause.
The Lohengrin of Heinrich Knote was most brilliant. It might be said that in the role of the mysterious knight this tenor has established himself as a vocal prototype. The remarkable sweetness and parity of his tone are never heard to better advantage than in the apostrophizing of the swan. Knote sings, but does not declaim, and in this respect approaches nearer to Jean De Reszke than any of the other German tenors.
In the choral climaxes he was wonderfully perfect and took his audience to heights of keenest admiration.
Knote's swan song last night was literally, as well as artistically, a swan song, for it marked the last appearance of this operatic star in the character in America for some time to come. Wednesday night Knote sings his farewell here in "Die Meistersinger." His leave of absence from Munich will then have expired.
Miss Edyth Walker sang Ortrud and gave a splendid interpretation.
Goritz endowed Friederich with considerable vocal charm, while Blass as Heinrich and Muhlmann as Der Herrufer were in full accord with the beautiful production of the Wagner opera.
