Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
At the Metropolitan Opera House yesterday the first week of the season of opera in foreign languages came to a close with the usual two performances. In the afternoon Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" was repeated with the principal singers who were heard in it on the [first] night of the season. Mme. Melba as Juliette was not in perfect voice, and was obliged to spare herself when it was possible to do so, but her skill in the art of tone placing enabled her to sing with good effect in the important episodes. M. Saleza was also a little out of his best form, and at times sang off the key, but his performance as a whole again commanded admiration. M. Gilibert, a French baritone, with a light voice, replaced M. Plan?on as Capulet. Especial mention is due Miss Carrie Bridewell for her work as Stephane, the page. She sang the solo in the exile scene with a plenitude of rich tone and with a pretty style. This young woman has a future, if she be ambitious and faithful in her work. The matinee audience was only fair in size.
