'Carmen' at the Opera

"Carmen," a grand opera in four acts, by Georg?s Bizet, was performed at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. It is well occasionally to make a note that this opera was composed by Bizet, lest some persons fall into the supposition that it was written by Mme. Calv?. Last night's performance was given under some difficulty. M. Salignac was to have sung the role of Don Jos?, but he was unfortunately indisposed, and only one other member of the company was available to fill his place. This was M. Jacques Bars. He consented to sing the part at extremely short notice for the first time in his life and without rehearsal. In the circumstances no comment can be made on his performance except to say he was courageous and prevented a change of opera.

Mme. Calv? was, of course, Carmen and further criticism of her interpretation of this role is quite unnecessary, especially at this late date in the season. The other principal persons in the cast were Miss Adams as Micaela, and Signor Scotti as Escamillo. Considering the circumstances the performance was in general acceptable. Signor Mancinelli conducted.
