Review 1:
Review in the Evening Post
Last night's popular concert received distinction from the presence of Ernst von Schuch, who conducted three of the orchestral numbers - Goldmark's "Sakuntala" overture, Bizet's first "Arlesienne" suite, and the prelude to Wagner's "Meistersinger." The audience was not slow in recognizing his master-hand and mind, and after the Wagner overture he was recalled repeatedly. There are rumors that he may conduct Wagner's comic opera next week, and the only thing to prevent it would be lack of time for rehearsing. Herr von Schuch has been an operatic conductor more than thirty years, and both while he was with Pollini in Hamburg and, since 1872, at Dresden he has gained distinction as a conductor of French and Italian as well as German operas. His sympathy with French music was made evident last night by the dainty, delicate, polished, and spirited interpretation he gave of the Bizet suite. This is one of several points in which the Dresden conductor reminds one of the late Anton Seidl, the second anniversary of whose death occurred a few days ago (March 28).
Among last night's soloists was Herr van Rooy, who sails for Europe tomorrow, and Mme. Schumann-Heink who deserves praise, not only for her singing, but her selections which included Gluck's "Eurydice" aria, Schubert's "Death and the Maiden," and Liszt's "Three Gypsies." The other soloists were Miss Strong and M. Plan?on.
