"MEFISTOFELE" AT THE OPERA
Mme. Calv? and M. Plan?on Applauded Once Again in Boito's Work
Boito's "Mefistofele" 'was given once again at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. A large audience was present and there was an. abundance of enthusiasm. The performance did not differ in any respect from those already given, unless in the general animation of its progress, which was due in a measure to the improved condition of Signor Cremonini. He was in much better voice than he was before and seemed to be generally easier in his part, which he sang well and acted with uncommon grace and freedom. Mme. Calve's voice did not show any traces of her recent indisposition, but was, on the contrary, clear and lovely in quality. Her performance of Margherita in this opera raises none of the questions that follow her unique interpretation of Gounod's Marguerite. It is wholly satisfying, especially in the overwhelming dramatic power of the prison scene. As Helen of Troy she makes a pretty picture, but, of course, there is no room in this part for dramatic work.
M. Plan?on was once again a most admirable Mefistofele. He sang and acted with fine vigor and, as usual, had to repeat "Son lo spirito che nega." Mme. Mantelli was a satisfactory Martha. The. Quartet in the garden scene was redemanded. The Brocken scene was effective and the prologue was given with fine force. Signor Mancinelli once more covered himself with glory by his superb conducting
