Review 1:
Review in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of the second Met "Messiah"
A BETTER "MESSIAH" THIS TIME
THE CHORUS BETTER PLACED AND NORDICA AS CHIEF SOLOIST
The indignant protest that went up from both cities over the mangling of "The Messiah" at the Metropolitan opera house last week had its effect and the performance last night was better. The orchestra had been placed down in front of the stage where it belongs. Mr. Wiske and his choristers of the Euterpe society were moved forward to the footlights and boxed in so that they could be heard, and greatest improvement of all, Nordica had replaced Saville. It is worth a great deal of mediocre music to hear this great artist sing "Rejoice Greatly" and "I know that my Redeemer liveth." She was in good voice last night and she was a rest and an inspiration. The other soloists were those of a week ago. Brema, the waggling Wallnoefer and Galloway. The chorus was just about as presentable as when it has sung the same music as the Choral society in the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Its star numbers were "for unto us a Son is born" and the "hallelujah." There have a good degree of snap in them and the voices were reasonably well balanced and most of the time in tune. The volume was weak for 300 voices and justified the belief that a good many of the singers have been scared off by the fiasco of a week ago and stayed at home. The audience certainly had been, and while it was good was by no means the crowded house which suffered under the first dispensation.
