Review in The New York Times

Metropolitan Opera House.

At the Metropolitan Opera House last night the familiar combination of Mascagni's powerful one-act opera. "Cavalleria Rusticana," and Leoncavallo's equally interesting work, "Pagliacci," was presented. Although this bill is by no means new, it is some time since it has been offered to the public, and no doubt many persons were glad to have an opportunity to see and hear Mme. Calv? in something besides the perennial "Carmen." As a result the house was packed, and the enthusiasm was plentiful.

It cannot be doubted by any one who has seen either performance more than once that Mme. Calv?'s Santuzza is a very much more serious and impressive piece of work than her Carmen. Last night she was in good voice and in an earnest mood, and she treated the audience to a splendid and moving exhibition of dramatic art. Signor Guille was a competent Turiddu, though it must be confessed that he was handicapped by his size, both his mistresses being taller than he. M. Martapoura was again the Alfio, Mlle. Guercia the Lola, and Mlle. Bauermeister the Lucia.

In "Pagliacci" the cast was the same as it has been on the majority of occasions when the opera was performed. Signor de Lucia repeated his impassioned and artistic performance of Canio to the great delight of the audience. Signor Ancona was again the Tonto, which is one of his best parts. Mme. Melba's Nedda is one of her worst parts, for she is never by any chance dramatic; but she sang the music with her unfailing beauty of voice and perfection of technic, The minor parts were performed by Signor Gromzeski and M. Guetary.
