The Opera House Concert.
The stars of the Sunday evening concert at the Metropolitan Opera House last night were Mme. Melba and the orchestra. The house was crowded to its utmost capacity. Indeed its capacity was increased for the occasion by putting a flooring over the pit usually occupied by the orchestra and covering it with chairs. The concert was in every way enjoyable, though one or two of the solo numbers might have been spared.
Mme. Melba was in good voice and spirits, and treated the audience to a dazzling display of her powers. Her two numbers were the familiar mad scene from Donizetti's "Lucia "and the valse song from "Romeo et Juliette." It is hardly necessary to say anything more than has already been said about her rendering of these numbers. Her delivery of the well-known cadenza with the flute was a marvel of smoothness, purity, and accuracy. The final trill was remarkable for its sustained power and quality. She was recalled half a dozen times and compelled to repeat the number. A similar scene of enthusiasm followed her singing of the Gounod music.
The orchestra played part of a very pretty new suite by Grieg called "Sigurd Jorsalfar." One of the numbers, "Borghild's Dream," is in Grieg's best style, which is saying a good deal. The "Coppelia" ballet music of Delibes also gave the audience great pleasure. M. Maugiere sang "Salve Dimora," and gave Siegmund's love song in a very French style as an encore. Mlle. Domenech sang the cantabile from Saint Saens's "Samson et Dalila," and Signor Ancona sang "Dio possente" from "Faust." Mr. Franko gained much applause by his performance of the violin solo from Saint Saens's "Deluge." For an encore he played Walter's prize song. It was a great night for Wagner.
