Review 1:
Review in the New York Times:
The merits of the performance of "Faust" by the opera company are so well known and so well recognized that it attracted last night, in spite of the bitter cold, one of the largest and most brilliant audiences of the season. It was met with a considerable disappointment in the announcement of the indisposition of Mme. Eames, and the consequent assumption of Marguerite by Mme. Nordica. The disappointment was not removed by the performance. Of course a singer who essays even so familiar a part as Marguerite on so very short a notice is entitled to every allowance, but it was not upon the points upon which allowances are to be made that Mme. Nordica was disappointing. She sang her music with perfect facility and absolute correctness, but her Marguerite was entirely without charm. On the other hand, Messrs. de Reszke and Lassalle were in admirable voice, the orchestra could scarcely have been better, and Gounod's masterpiece has very seldom been more worthily or more impressively presented.
