Review 1:
Review in the New York Times of 3/5/1892:
The performance of "Carmen" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was somwhat unbalanced by reason of the sudden indispostion of Mlle. Giulia Ravogli, who was to have appeared in the title role. Her place was taken at very short notice by Mme. Tavary, who, strangely enough, sang her part in German. It was unfortunate that Mme. Tavary had to rush in to fill a vacancy, for she was certainly suffering from nervousness. She would probably have sung the part much better had she been given a little more time to prepare for the ordeal of facing the Metropolitan public. It is to be hoped that if Mme. Tavary has occasion at any future time to sing Carmen, she will succeed in finding a better "make-up" than that of last evening.
Signor Valero was the Don Jos? of the performance, and he acquitted himself very well, achieving a great success with the audience. The Escamillo was Signor Magini-Coletti. The most satisfactory interpretation was that of Micaela by Mme. Eames. She looked the part to perfection, and acted it with a gentle dignity which was altogether charming. As for her singing, only praise can be spoken of that. Her phrasing was always lovely and the fine quality of her voice was heard to great advantage.
