L'Africaine received three performances this season.
From The New York Times review of the next day:
"The following interesting notice, printed on cardboard, appeared in each of the boxes of the Metropolitan Opera House last evening:
Jan. 15, 1891
Many complaints having been made to the Opera House of the annoyance produced by the talking in the boxes during the performances, the board requests that it be discontinued.
By Order of the Board of Directors
This recognition of the rights of the general public, which contributes one-half of the amount received in the course of the searson at the Metropolitan, comes somewhat late in the proceedings, but is none the less significant. It is a just proclamation and might have been made before without loss of dignity."
