METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.

The second performance of Smareglia's "Vassalo of Szigeth" was given at the Metropolitan Opera House last night. A second hearing of this work confirms the impression made by the first. There can be no question as to the composer's uncommon gifts and his knowledge of his art. The writing for the voices, both solo and chorus, and the instrumentation are excellent. There should have been mention in the previous notice of this work of the fine ensemble at the close of the second act. This is a really fine piece of writing and should have been enumerated among the gems of the work.

The performance last night was smooth and effective. Frau Sch?ller was in good voice and did justice to her r?le, Herr Reichmann sang admirably, seldom wandering from the key. Herr Dippel also sang well. Fr?ulein Huhn distinguished herself by singing almost all of her short r?le out of tune. The chorus and orchestra did their work well. A word of praise is due to the ballet master for his picturesque arrangement of the dance, which is executed with a precision new to the Opera House.
