Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
The performance of "The Flying Dutchman" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was pitched on a high key of excellence. In general effect it was one of the most admirable performances that have ever been given in the house. The cast was unchanged, and it was well that it was, for with the present company it would be difficult to give the work in a more satisfactory manner. Indeed, it may be questioned whether the opera has ever been given here in a manner more earnest and faithful to the composer's intentions. Herr Reichmann's impersonation of the unhappy hero has gained in ease since the first night, when he was naturally somewhat anxious about his reception in a new country. Last night he sang with splendid vigor and dramatic effect.
Herr Fischer's Daland is a capital foil to Vanderdecken. It is brimful of breezy jollity, and is vocally full of merit. Fr?ulein Wiesner's Senta has also improved, and was last night a very commendable piece of work. Herr Kalisch deserves especial praise for his exceedingly tasteful rendering of Erik's measures. The chorus sang excellently, and the orchestra discharged its duties with zeal. Tomorrow evening Verdi's "Ballo in Maschera" will be given for the first time at this house.
