Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
The performance of "Siegfried" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening attracted an audience of great size. The noble music drama was never better done than last night. It was one of those notable occasions when our memories of Herr Alvary's faults are lost in admiration. His young Siegfried last night was vital with the impassioned energy of youth. He radiated a divine fire that warmed the whole audience. It is not too much to say that Herr Alvary sang and acted Siegfried last night better than at any previous time, and this is high praise.
Herr Sedlmayer's Mime, which is vocally weak, has improved histrionically and is now a more significant interpretation than it was formerly. Herr Fischer was in good voice, and his Wotan was dignified and commendable. Herr Beck appeared again as Alberich, a part in which he shines to advantage.
Frau Lehmann repeated her noble impersonation of Br?nnhilde, which for lofty dignity and dramatic intensity has never been equaled and hardly approached on the operatic stage in this city, except by her own more powerful treatment of the same role in "Die G?tterd?mmerung." Fr?ulein Meisslinger was a satisfactory Erda and Fr?ulein Traubmann sang the bird music creditably. The final performance of the first series of Nibelungen representations will be given on Monday evening, when "Die G?tterd?mmerung" will be heard for the first time.
