Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
"Die Walk?re" was performed at the Metropolitan Opera House yesterday afternoon before an audience that literally packed the house alew and aloft. Herr Perotti was sick and Siegmund was sung by Herr Paul Kalisch. It is impossible to congratulate this conscientious artist on the result of his earnest efforts. He lacks the command of presence, the authority of manner, and the volume of voice necessary to make an impressive Siegmund. His conception of the r?le was conventionally Wagnerian, but his exposition of his correct ideas was without influence.
Herr Fischer was also on the sick list, and his substitute, Herr Grinauer, was far from satisfactory. Fr?uleinSenger-Bettaque was the Sieglinde. She looked well, but that was all. She sang with an unusual amount of acidity, and made several reprehensible excursions into keys not set down in the score. Her acting was listless and ineffective.
Fortunately, Fran Lehmann was at hand to sing Br?nnhilde, as she alone has sung it in America, and the Valkyr sisters were effective as heretofore. The performance as a whole, however, was far from being equal to the first representation of the opera this season, and it will be unfortunate if Herr Perotti and Herr Fischer are not in harness when the trilogy performances are given
