Review 1:
Review in The New York Times
METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE.
The performance of "Siegfried" at the Metropolitan Opera House last evening was notable for its elevated mood and its general vitality. Those who are familiar with public amusements are aware that the performances of any particular piece vary in spirit, sometimes being almost devoid of life and again being pitched on just the right key. Last night was one of the occasions when the latter condition existed, and the result was that the large audience was moved to great enthusiasm.
Herr Alvary was in excellent voice, and he sang with all his familiar vigor. His performance has always been conspicuous for its buoyancy and its fine atmosphere of youth and manhood, but it is just to say that these qualities never shone more brilliantly than last evening. Herr Sedlmayer's Mime has improved not a little since the first presentation of the music drama. Herr Fischer was not in good voice, but his interpretation of Wotan was not lacking in its usual dignity. Herr Beck's Alberich was as good as it has been heretofore. Frau Lehmann returned to her familiar r?le of Br?nnhlide, which she sang and acted with the full power of her well-known ability. Fr?ulein Traubmann sang the bird music tolerably. The orchestra, as usual, was excellent.
The sale of seats for the performances of the Nibelungen trilogy, which begin on March 4, opened yesterday. The demand was remarkably large and gave ample evidence of the wide interest in the coming event.
